Quick guide to scanning negative films with Linocolor 6

Correcting negative films scans from Linocolor in Photoshop

Open the calibration scan in Photoshop. You can open with the embedded tiffrgb profile and convert to your working space.

Change the mode to 16bit under Image > mode > 16bit.

Command L to bring up the levels. Adjust the end points to outside the beginning of the data histogram extremities.

You do want to keep a few extra levels for now.

Command M to bring up the curves dialogue box. Reduce any color cast now. Usually there is a heavy green/cyan cast so you will want to remove highlight blue, and add a mid range red curve. The red curve should be a global one or two point curve broad and large. The others normally would be subtle, sometimes fixed points to retain the correct zones from being changed.

Go to image > mode and convert to 8bit. You should now be ready to do your final tweaks whether it be some selective color, and or hue/saturation. You may want to locally sharpen any high contrast spots. Negatives scan very sharp and usually don't need any USM sharpening.
