Prescan to set the cropping.
Go to the Import menu > SetBaseDensity > Dialogue menu.
Set the Negative White for all channels to 0.00 logD.
Set the Negative Black to Red 1.70 Green 2.00 and Blue 2.00.
Normally this should be appropriate for normal density negatives. Cross processed negatives may be extend the logD values to 2.80. Your scanner may not be able to define differences though at these levels. The preview could look washed out with a strong color bias. This will be corrected out in Photoshop.
